I found this song in a book by Alan and John Lomax. They have a section devoted to Railroader's and Hobo's songs. This song was written in a time when opiates weren't seen as any more serious of a habit than drinking. Before everyone caught on to the repercussions of these drugs, there were songs written about the crazy drug trip. Like this one.
